Learning Outcomes
  • Japanese syllabaries: Hiragana and Katakana;
  • Latin script: Rōmaji;
  • 50 Kanji radicals.

  • Sentence structure N1 は N2 です
  • Demonstrative pronouns あの・どの・この・ここ・そこ・あそこ・どこ・こちら・あちら・どちら (The こ・そ・あ・ど system of demonstrative words)
  • Questions with かand sentence structure with が
  • Numbers, dates and time; money, colours
  • Basic classifiers and counting objects
  • Frequency adverbs such as 'mainich (everyday)', 'yoku (often)', and 'tokidoki (sometimes)' to a sentence to describe how often you do something.

  • Adjectives ending in い and なin the present affirmative and present negative

Lessons, practicum, presentations and role-play and recordings.
General Objectives
  • To enable the learner with the necessary basics to facilitate communication using very basic vocabulary and phrases in Japanese related to everyday life and representative of the home, work, social and public settings.
  • To further one’s learning programme and gain access to further training.
Ongoing assessment, written exercises, final examination.
General Education Award in Japanese. The NCFHE deems this General Education Award (7 credits) to be at Level 1 of the MQF and the EQF for Lifelong Learning.
Access to next level of education/training
After successfully completing this course, learners can then proceed to MQF Level 2.
