Learning Outcomes

 The course is a hands-on programme, focusing on the processes and techniques involved in printmaking. Throughout the course learners will be able to choose an appropriate printing technique to adapt their own visual ideas.  They will also be introduced to the ethical process of registration,  signing and numbering of original prints.  

The course will cover the following aspects:
• The characteristics of an etching as compared to other graphic media
• The different metals and acids and chemicals used for etching.
• Different methods of biting a plate and the use of etching needles.
• The characteristics and application of hard-ground, soft-ground, liquid ground and retouching varnish.
• Applying and smoking a hard-ground.
• Sharpening and using the etching needle.
• Drawing, biting and reworking a plate
• Printing the etched plate
• Applying an aquatint ground by hand and with the use of an aquatint box
• Biting an aquatint
• Mixing and using the sugar-lift solution
• Using soft ground on its own and with aquatint
