Levels, Certificates & Qualifications

It is important that learners choose the appropriate levels and courses that fit their needs and abilities. It is recommended that participants achieve a minimum of 75% in the final assessment and/or initial diagnostic test to progress to the next level course.

A letter of attendance can only be issued if participants attend 80% of lessons. In the case of courses which are accredited and/or have a formal assessment, only participants who attend 80% of the course can sit for such exams/be formally assessed.

The Directorate offers various course levels including:

Introductory Level: These courses target students with difficulties in reading and/or writing, maths and computing. These lessons are mainly conducted in Maltese.

MQF Level 1, MQF Level 2 and MQF Level 3: Malta Qualifications Framework (MQF) Courses marked as MQF have been approved and accredited by the National Commission for Further and Higher Education.

MQF 1 indicates a basic course that introduces students to a subject for the first time. At MQF 2 and MQF 3 students will continue to improve competences in that subject.

The accreditation process is still ongoing for a number of courses. They will not necessarily be accredited within this academic year. However, the levels are included so as to indicate what level you can expect to reach through these courses.

MATSEC: This refers to the Secondary Education Certificate (SEC), also known as the O’ level, Intermediate level and Advanced Level. The Directorate offers revision courses for MATSEC. Students who register for these courses are expected to have already reached the required level in the relevant subject.

Other Classes: There are other courses such as ECDL (MQF 3) and Electrical Installation (Licence A) which prepare participants for other external examining bodies.

Open Classes: These courses are for learners who already finished the first level of a particular course, or who have been attending classes for a number of years. Through these Open Classes, learners will have the opportunity to keep learning and boost their skills.

Certificates/letters are to be requested from the Directorate by no later than 1 year after the completion of the course.
