Accounting A-level

Entry Requirements

School leaving standard of education is recommended. It would be an asset to have an O’Level in the subject. Applicants who do not present certification of prior study in the subject will be required to sit for a level check to determine the appropriate course level.
For online lessons, learners need to have an understanding on how to use a computer.

Learning Outcomes

Expected learning outcomes for this course inlcude:

Knowledge

  • Understand key roles in accounting: financial, cost and management accounting, and auditing.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of:
    o Accounting concepts (e.g., accruals, going concern, prudence).
    o Financial statements (e.g., profit or loss, changes in equity, cash flows).
    o Types of business entities (sole trader, partnerships, companies, non-profits).
    o Costing principles and inventory valuation (FIFO, AVCO).
    o Budgeting, variance analysis, and performance measurement.
    o International Financial Reporting Standards (e.g., IAS 1, 2, 7, 16, 36, 38, IFRS 3).
    o Ratios for evaluating profitability, liquidity, and efficiency.

Skills

  • Prepare complete financial statements for various business types.
  • Prepare published accounts in compliance with IAS 1 formatting.
  • Apply control accounts and correct accounting errors using journals and suspense accounts.
  • Perform bank reconciliations and interpret cash flows.
  • Apply depreciation methods and understand asset impairment.
  • Handle budgeting tasks (functional and master budgets).
  • Use costing techniques: job, process, marginal, and absorption costing.
  • Calculate and analyse standard costing variances (materials, labour, overheads).
  • Perform ratio analysis to interpret financial health.
  • Make informed decisions using management accounting tools (e.g., make or buy, break-even).

  • Evaluate financial and management data for strategic business decision-making.
  • Apply accounting standards and local legislation to practical scenarios.
  • Communicate accounting information accurately and clearly in professional contexts.
  • Exercise sound judgement in selecting and applying accounting techniques.
