30-week course with 3 contact hours per week

Learning Outcomes

Expected learning outcomes for this course inlcude:

Knowledge

  • Understand the structure, function, and classification of living organisms.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of biological molecules, cell organisation, and the principles of nutrition, respiration, reproduction, and homeostasis.
  • Recognise the role of humans in environmental conservation and impact.
  • Understand genetic inheritance and how variation contributes to evolution.
  • Recognise how organisms interact within ecosystems, and how human activity affects biodiversity and climate.

Skills

  • Identify and label anatomical structures in humans, plants, and other organisms.
  • Describe biological processes such as photosynthesis, digestion, respiration, osmoregulation, and reproduction.
  • Use scientific methods to carry out experiments, collect data, and analyse results.
  • Apply problem-solving approaches to interpret biological data and suggest evidence-based conclusions.
  • Use appropriate terminology to describe concepts such as food chains, genetic crosses, immune responses, and ecological relationships.

Competences

  • Communicate biological ideas effectively in oral and written forms.
  • Apply biological knowledge in real-life contexts, including health, food production, and environmental sustainability.
  • Evaluate scientific information and make informed decisions based on biological principles.
  • Demonstrate ethical awareness in topics such as genetics, biodiversity conservation, and use of biological technology.
  • Work independently and collaboratively in practical tasks, investigations, and discussions.

Certification/Award

MATSEC certification upon sitting for and passing the exam.

Progression to Further Education

After successfully completing this course, learners may pursue further study in related fields or use this qualification as part of their overall portfolio for entry into post-secondary or tertiary education, including through the maturity clause.
