Maths SEC (Level 3-3)
Entry Requirements
Applicants need to have either successfully completed the Maths MQF 2 course or sit for a level check to determine the appropriate course level
Duration
30 week course of 3 contact hours weekly
Learning outcomes
Expected learning outcomes for this course include:
Knowledge
- Understand advanced number concepts including standard form, indices, roots, surds, and proportional reasoning.
- Master algebraic techniques: simplification, factorisation, expansion, rearranging formulae, and solving equations (linear, simultaneous, and quadratic).
- Understand function notation and graphical representation of linear, quadratic, and other non-linear functions.
- Have in-depth knowledge of geometry: congruence, similarity, Pythagoras’ Theorem, circle theorems, loci, and constructions.
- Understand trigonometry including sine, cosine, tangent ratios, and their use in problem-solving in both 2D and 3D.
- Understand statistical measures (mean, median, mode, range), cumulative frequency, box plots, histograms, and probability distributions.
Skills
- Apply arithmetic, algebraic, geometric, and graphical methods to complex problem-solving tasks.
- Solve equations and inequalities, including those involving brackets, fractions, or quadratics.
- Interpret and draw graphs of various functions, including real-life applications (e.g. speed-time, distance-time).
- Use accurate constructions and apply circle theorems to geometric proofs.
- Apply trigonometry and Pythagoras’ Theorem in multi-step 2D and 3D problems.
- Represent data accurately, interpret diagrams, and calculate probabilities involving two-way tables, tree diagrams, and Venn diagrams.
- Analyse and compare sets of data using statistical measures and graphs.
Competences
- Tackle unfamiliar mathematical problems systematically and independently.
- Transfer knowledge across different mathematical domains (e.g. linking algebra and geometry).
- Communicate mathematical arguments clearly using formal language, structured reasoning, and correct notation.
- Use digital tools (e.g. scientific calculators, spreadsheets) responsibly to support efficiency and accuracy.
- Apply mathematics confidently in real-life and abstract scenarios, such as financial planning, scale drawing, or statistical interpretation.
- Reflect critically on methods used, justify approaches, and evaluate solutions for reasonableness and effectiveness.
Delivery method
Online lessons.
Certification/Award
Certificate issued by MATSEC.
Progression to further education
After successfully completing this course, learners may continue studying the subject at post-secondary level, such as Intermediate level, or pursue related pathways at tertiary level, including through alternative entry routes such as the maturity clause.
